As part of the GEA project, BUPNET facilitated a discussion with local residents focusing on how flood-retention measures influence everyday life in the surrounding communities. The conversation took place on September 8th 2025 in a constructive and open atmosphere, giving participants space to share observations from their long-standing engagement with environmental issues.

Residents expressed clear appreciation for the protective function of the flood-retention basin at Breitenauer See, noting its importance in reducing risks to nearby settlements and infrastructure. At the same time, they pointed to challenges linked to growing recreational pressure around the lake, including noise, littering and parking issues during peak periods.

Several practical ideas emerged, such as improved coordination among responsible authorities, clearer communication during inspections and more consistent visitor-management strategies. Participants also highlighted the value of exchanging experiences between municipalities facing similar flood-related challenges, as shared learning can support better local decision-making.
